Winter Fun on a Budget

As winter approaches, I often find myself tempted to spend the chilly months wrapped up in a warm blanket with a cup of tea. Despite this, it is important to take advantage of the beautiful northern location Nipissing has to offer. North Bay offers a variety of fun and inexpensive activities to help you enjoy this winter season.

Here are a few student friendly activities to help both indoor and outdoor enthusiasts alike to enjoy the cold months ahead.

Laurentian Ski Hill:

Whether you are a seasoned expert or new to the slopes, Laurentian Ski Hill has a variety of options to suit every skier and snowboarder. Featuring a quad chairlift, beginner hill with lift, and Northern Ontario’s best terrain park, Laurentian Ski Hill is the perfect place to spend the winter months. Wednesday is Canadore/ Nipissing Student Day and you can purchase a four-hour lift ticket and rentals for only $35. Laurentian Ski Hill is also located right next to the Laurentian Escarpment Trails and offers snowshoe rentals starting at $5. Public Skating:

Participating in public skating is a fun and inexpensive way to spend the winter months. North Bay offers public skating at Memorial Gardens and Pete Palangio Area. Student rates are $3.60 at Pete Palangio Arena or $2.50 at Memorial Gardens. Additionally, there are 13 outdoor rinks throughout the city to enjoy free of charge. Nordic Skiing:

For those who enjoy cross-country skiing, the Nordic Ski Club is a beautiful place to visit on a sunny winter day. Student rates begin at $7 per day for a ski pass and $10 for a ski rental package or $20 for skate ski package. Capital Centre:

The Capital Centre is a beautiful theatre located on Main Street, hosting a variety of performances from all around the world. Whether you enjoy concerts, symphonies, dancing, comedy, or theatre, the Capital Centre offers performances that appeal to all interests. Nipissing students are eligible to purchase an exclusive U-Go Pass, designed specifically for university students. Ticket prices vary for each show, but offer a significant price reduction in comparison to regular admissions. The Capital Centre also presents movie screenings every Sunday night for only $6. Partner’s Bowling and Billiards:

Partner’s is equipped with 16 lanes of 5-pin bowling and 24 pool tables. Tuesday nights from 6:00-11:00 pm is Glow in the Dark Student Night featuring all you can bowl for $14.25 per person (including shoes). Sunday is College/University night in the Billiards Hall offering a 50% discount on pool table rentals for students from 7:00 pm- close.
