Wardrobe Basics For Uni Girls

Basics

Everybody needs basics in their closet. Some plain T-shirts and tank tops are the best base to any outfit. They’re also incredibly easy to style. Throw on any one of your basic tops, a pair of jeans, a scarf and a bit of jewelry and you’re ready to go anywhere!

Jackets

Of course, you need a winter coat for the deathly cold winter up here, but it’s also good to have a stylish jacket or two, for when it gets a little warmer out. Depending on your personal style, this could mean a denim jacket, a leather jacket, a military style jacket, or all three. Jackets are great to finish off an outfit and keep you from getting cold.

Coloured Blazer

A blazer is a great piece to have in your wardrobe. I recommend a coloured one, because it’s easier to style casually and you won’t look like you’re going to a funeral or to court. Try to find one that’s form-fitting and in a light fabric, so that it doesn’t look too structured when you don’t want it to. If you want to look professional, wear a blouse underneath and dress pants or a pencil skirt. To go casual, wear it with any T-shirt and your favourite jeans.

Versatile Dress

You need a dress that can take you from your important presentation, to getting coffee with friends, to the bar. I recommend something that’s just above the knee in length and has something interesting going on at the neckline. For a professional look, add a blazer. Make it casual by throwing on a comfortable cardigan and some flats. Make it appropriate for the bar by pairing it with jewelry, heels, and a leather jacket if you please.

Shoes

Almost every girl loves shoes, but you don’t need 6 pairs of heels and 4 pairs of black booties while you’re at school. There are only a few different types of shoes you really need to look dressed up, professional, or casual. In your closet, you should have a pair of nice comfortable flats, that can be dressed up or down. It’s also good to have a pair of heels that aren’t too fancy, for occasions where you want a bit of height. A pair of black or brown boots are great too, whether they’re tall, short, heeled, flat… Depending on the type of girl you are, you may want a pair of comfortable sneaker-type shoes, in case walking around in flats all day is not your cup of tea. Also, if your feet aren’t very tolerant to the cold, or you don’t like wool socks, warm winter boots are good to have too.

Accessories

Accessories can make or break an outfit (usually they make it though). Some basic accessories you should have are scarves, a patterned and a solid coloured one; necklaces, a long, a short, and a statement; sunglasses, to protect your eyes; rings; bracelets, some casual, some fancy, or some that can be both; and maybe a headband or other hair accessory.

Other

Don’t forget about socks and underwear! You should also have some pants, a skirt or two, leggings, tights and pajamas. Of course, you don’t have to go out and buy all of these things, but these are key items that I wear to make sure I always look stylish.
