Recruiting for a University I didn’t Attend

When I told my friends and family that I had gotten a job recruiting for Nipissing University, I got the same question over and over; “Isn’t it going to be difficult to represent a University you didn’t go to?”

They got it half right. I did not attend Nipissing University for my undergraduate degree. When it came time for me to choose a university I was hesitant to break out of my comfort zone. I grew up in the Niagara region and had always planned on staying in that bubble. University was a daunting prospect, and I was fearful of compounding that with attending somewhere that I wasn’t already comfortable and familiar with.

While I wouldn’t go as far as saying that I regret my choice, I do wish that I had kept a more open mind and had done the careful research that is so important when choosing where you will spend the next four years of your life. Having attended multiple post-secondary institutions, as well as having worked at multiple post-secondary institutions, I cannot stress enough how special and unique Nipissing University is. Sometimes I worry that I can’t fully appreciate just how true that statement is without having studied here, but then I remind myself that my experience elsewhere gives me a greater appreciation for everything that makes Nipissing University so incredible.

There is plenty that is obvious to anyone visiting; the beautiful setting, the incredible facilities and the strength of the programs that we offer students. What makes Nipissing so amazing however, are the things you need to be here to experience. I am a great example of this. When I joined the Recruitment team, I was a bundle of nerves and uncertainty. I was in a brand new city almost five hours away from my friends and family and I was starting a brand new job in a setting that I wasn’t familiar with. When I walked into the office on my first day, my coworker Maggie very enthusiastically showed me where my desk was (shout-out to Maggie!) and completely eased my nerves with her warm smile and friendly demeanor. It became very apparent just how supportive and friendly the entire Nipissing University community is to their staff, faculty and most importantly, their students. We met with faculty from all areas of the University and the care they take in their programs, as well as the support that they offer their students cannot be undersold. Our small size is our biggest strength, and the quality of education Nipissing offers reflects that.

So no, I did not attend Nipissing University. Is it difficult to represent a university that I did not attend? Absolutely not. I do it proudly every single day.
