So you’ve decided to come to Nipissing

Here’s what you need to know.

Yes, going away to university for the first time is scary. You are not alone. It will be okay, I promise. I remember being really scared to leave home for the first time. I was nervous about all the unknowns that lie ahead. But what you need to know is that those fears dissipate within about two weeks. Once you are settled in to residence, you’ve met your roommates, gone to your first week of classes, and met your professors, you’ll come to realize that you can handle it and that everything is going to be alright.

Do frosh week. You don’t want to miss out on this opportunity to have a blast before classes start. This will be your chance to meet other first years, make friends, and have a ton a fun before ever needing to worry about opening a book. With events like The Amazing Race and inflatable games, how could you resist? Out of the five years that I attended Nipissing, frosh week is still the week I talk about most.

Do your readings. Doing your readings is the key to being successful in your first year courses.

Go see your professors during their office hours. I can’t emphasize this one enough. Nipissing professors are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. They want to see you be successful, and they are there to help you. Take advantage of office hours, and ask for help if you need it.

Develop a study routine, and stick to it. Figure out how you study best by testing out different study methods and environments. Try the quiet study area in the library, the comfy couches in the green lounge, or the study rooms in residence. There are a lot of great places to study on campus, go explore; you’re sure to find the perfect place for you. If you’re prone to procrastination like I am, do a Google search for anti-procrastination websites. There are a few out there that will block social media for a set amount of time so you can focus on getting that paper done without those self-imposed distractions!

It won’t take long for you to get settled into life as a university student. Before you know it you’ll be saying to yourself, “Why was I ever even worried? Nipissing is amazing!” It really is!
