If you are anything like me, you may be at a point in your life where you just don’t know what your next step should be. Growing up, I had two life dreams: to be a Criminal Profiler (cough, this was during my Criminal Minds addiction), and to be a published author. I grew out of the former, however, many years later when people ask me what I want to be when I grow up my answer is always the same: a writer.
Yet, here I am on a Tuesday night writing this blog post and looking over my notes for a midterm tomorrow. So why am I going to Nipissing for teaching? I’ve been told my whole life that being a writer isn’t a real job. That I had to attend school for something else, something more stable and permanent. So I went into teaching, which, don’t get me wrong, is a great profession and something that I love. But my passion is, and always has been, writing.
So this is where the dilemma comes into play. Do you follow your head? Or do you follow your heart? Do you follow logic or passion? What other people want you to do, or what you want to do? This answer will differ for every person. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to follow their dreams, especially when it is in a field that can, for a lack of a better word, be “unstable.”
At this point in my university career it doesn’t make sense to drop out of the program I am enrolled in. I am close to the finish line and am willing to work in the teaching field for a few years while I set myself up as a debut author. My hope is to pursue a masters in creative writing after I’m done teachers’ college and thus kind of get the best of both worlds!
So I say to you, if at all possible: follow your heart. Follow your passions. Follow your dreams.
