My, how lucky we are

It’s easy to take for granted how fortunate we are to be on such a well-equipped campus. When our usual mind state is oriented toward what could be better, what we don’t have, and what we want, we can so easily lose perspective on what we do have and what really matters.

I never really used to think much about the services that we had available. I knew they were there and I knew that if I was ever in a situation where I would need them they would be available, but other than that they pretty much stayed at the back of my mind.

It isn’t until I actually needed these services that I realized how fortunate we are to have them on our campus, despite our small size. Services like note taking, having an on-campus health centre, and counselling services available no matter the issue.

These services were completely worth taking advantage of. Services like counselling are greatly beneficial as they offer opportunities like one-on-one counselling, group sessions and other opportunities available for students. It is a safe environment free of judgement that is really meant for any student to have access to. Other services such as Student Accessibility Services offer opportunities for students to get paid to write notes for their own classes. Also, students can get a peer note taker for their class if something prevents them from being able to take notes. The campus Health Centre also offers doctor’s appointments for students in a convenient location.

These are only three of the services available to students here and the descriptions are only a small snapshot of everything they offer; there are many more services that are available. Having these services really makes the difference when getting an education. If you face some tough times while you’re here, you have supports. Having these support systems has certainly made the difference in my educational experience here and I cannot even begin to imagine what my time here would be like without them.
