To quote my friend, “snow is both a blessing and a curse.” While it looks great from our bedroom windows and makes for excellent pictures, it also makes for a tough season of frozen windshields, slippery sidewalks, and frostbite. However, there are also many great ways to enjoy the snow that is inevitably going to be sticking around for a while. To boost some upset spirits, I’ve compiled a list of some fun things that can be done in North Bay, now that we have snow. Hopefully these fun activities peak your interest and can make the cold weather a little more exciting. Some things include:
Whether you’re a beginner, or a pro, head over to the Laurentian Ski Hill to hit the slopes. This is a great place to blow off some steam, hang with friends, or get in a work-out.
While a little tricker if you don’t have a snowmobile, there are a number of trails and paths open for those who want to snowmobile in North Bay. Check out the North Bay website for more information on rentals, trails and permits.
If you’re looking for something fun to do with friends, head over to Memorial Gardens for some fun indoor skating. Alternatively, you can also skate outdoors on the Founders rink, nice and close to home. This is a great activity to do if you’re looking for a way to spend some time outdoors.
Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing
Nipissing is surrounded by a number of wonderful trails and paths open for those who wish to cross country ski or snowshoe. The Canadore gym even has rentals that you can pick up if you’re feeling adventurous but don’t have all the equipment. Check out the Nipissing website for a full map of the trails.
Building snowmen is a great way to spend time outside while requiring less physical effort. Have a snowman building contest, hang out with friends and roommates, and see who can be the most creative. Snowmen are a great way to have fun, and decorate our residence community.
While a little extra caution is required, snowball fights are another great way to blow off steam. Head out with some friends, throw some snow, and laugh away all your academic stress.
Now if absolutely none of these suggestions I recommended sound appealing to you, I suggest a number of different indoor activities. For those of you who live on campus, residence programming might just become your best friend. However, I would also recommend movie nights, board game sessions, and spending time with friends. Staying indoors can be just as fun, and some good hot chocolate, a fuzzy blanket, and a netflix account can be just as good for self-care as some outdoor activities. Find out what works best for you, and embrace the snow. For, as Jon Snow would say, winter is coming.
