The snow seems to keep piling up, and I know that if you’re like me, you’re sick of winter already, BUT it’s only February and winter has only just started. I figured I would put together a collection of three key ways to beat the winter blues and to make the most of the winter season!
1 – Get Outside
Gather together your roommates, your best friend or your significant other and get outside. Go on a hike! Go snowshoeing! While North Bay may be freezing, it’s also beautiful outside the campus. There are numerous trails to hike on, or if hiking isn’t your thing, walk over to Twiggs for a hot cup of tea! Either way, you can spend some quality time with your friends, get some great pictures for social media, and get out your house.
I know my worst habit during the winter is never wanting to leave the warmth of my bed because of how cold it is. But, that’s not healthy! There is so much to do in North Bay, and the winter shouldn’t stop that!
Go for a walk, take a hike, go shopping, go to the gym. Do whatever makes you happy!
2 – Make Time for Yourself
This time of year especially stresses me out. I have two essays, an essay proposal and a test to study for. But we can’t forget that we need balance in our lives too. Make sure you make time for yourself! I find my winter blues are directly connected with stressing myself out. Ensure that you make a schedule to plan out your time efficiently but also to allow yourself to have free time. I love Netflix, and I love reading before bed. I make sure I organize my time, so I can also get some free time.
Ensure you leave time for yourself to do what you want even if it’s for a few hours.
3 – Take up a new Hobby
Recently, I’ve been coloring a lot! It helps to elevate stress and pass the time. Winter is a great time to take up a new hobby especially if you feel like you have the winter blues. Try coloring or knitting. Better yet take up a personal fitness routine like doing yoga. While you may be cooped up inside it doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun. Or even plan an activity for you and your roommates to do. Try baking or cooking, or what my roommates and I loved to do last year, throw an impromptu dance party!
While winter may feel like forever because not only is it cold and you have tons of homework and midterms to study for, look on the bright side, reading week is in less than two weeks and before you know it spring will be right around the corner!
Hopefully one of my tips will help you out on curing your winter blues! What are your favourite ways to cure the winter blues?
