The Importance of Self-Care

Over my time at Nipissing, I have learned the importance of self-care and the implications that it has on my schoolwork, my friendships, and my career. When I fail to take care of myself I get stressed easier, I do poorer on schoolwork, and things go downhill quickly. I’ve also been fortunate enough to have been able to develop a successful self-care routine for myself that addresses my mind, body and soul. It may sound a little silly, but I find if I neglect to self care in a certain area, I feel and see the implications pretty quickly. While this may be a new concept to some, I’ve outlined some of the fun activities and ways that I self-care across all realms. Hopefully, with some suggestions from me, friends around you, or support at Nipissing, you can all determine what self-care means to you, and get through the rest of the semester, and your degree at Nipissing as healthily as possible.

Body:

  • Go to the gym
  • Do yoga
  • Sleep
  • Make and eat a healthy, fun meal

Mind:

  • Journal
  • Read
  • Unplug from technology
  • Spend time with friends
  • Watch a movie

Soul:

  • Listen to/perform some music
  • Have a DIY night
  • Take a bath
  • Meditate

While I’ve only listed a few things that might work for you, everyone’s self-care is different. What works for one person, might not work for another. Now is a great time to experiment. Find what works for you, try new things, and do what you love. For some, it might just be lying in bed and watching a movie, while for others it might be going out for a hike now that the snow is melting. You’ll never know what works for you until you try.
