Teachers College Here I Come!

Well, with my final few weeks here at Nipissing, it’s time I did a self-reflection of the best four years of my life. Reading Week has just passed, and that means there is only a few more weeks of school before I can call myself a Nipissing University Graduate – but the best part is that I get to come back for more! I’ve had so many amazing memories here, and I’m so excited to see what the future two years have in store.

Goodbye for now, not forever!

It has truly been an awesome experience to be able to travel to high schools around Ontario promoting something that I am so passionate about and an institution that I hold dear to my heart – Nipissing University! I have had some great conversations, met amazing individuals and can honestly say that although at the beginning of this journey, you may have been hesitant or unsure, whatever you choose to pursue you will succeed at!

Views From The Road: A Travel Season in Photographs

I have a confession to make. Over the course of this past travel season I’ve taken a truly unreal amount of scenic photographs. I couldn’t help myself. Ontario is just gorgeous and every new place I got to visit, brought with it a new awesome view.

Embracing Graduation and other Adult things

So you’re sitting here watching Friends on Netflix and all of a sudden you realize that it’s almost December and you have so many things you still need to do. You have a final group project, individual essays, and in less than two weeks you have 4 exams. All you can do at this point is try to avoid those potential mental breakdowns and scramble to your calendar to try and make some notes on how you are going to start prioritizing your time.

Undecided or Indecisive: How to decide which program is right for you

Over the past nine weeks, I have had the pleasure of meeting lots of students and I can’t help but notice a trend. There are so many students who are still undecided and just want to study everything. If you are one of those students, do not fear because I was once in your shoes and with this job, I find myself again very indecisive as to what I want to study next. My hope is that by the end of this blog, you will feel inspired and have some more tools in your toolbox to help you make the right decision for you!

Practice Makes Perfect

Most students expect that university isn’t going to be much different than high school, other than it being a little harder with a whole lot of freedom. For me, that wasn’t untrue. Everything was kind of what I expected from my high school years but what I thought would be harder, was actually so much more intense. The classes were harder, the exams and assignments were harder, and the readings were more demanding.

Myths: From High School to University

Grade 12 can be a tough year. Students get bombarded with information from all sides; parents, friends, teachers, and everyone in between all have an opinion about what you should be doing and where you should go. Through all of this, a lot of myths form about the university experience.

There and Back Again: From the GTA to North Bay and Back

I’ve spent the past few weeks of the travel season primarily in the GTA. While it is the area of the province I’m originally from, I haven’t spent too much time there since moving up north almost a decade ago.

Open House…It’s worth it to make the trip!

You’ve heard it before but I’ll say it again…if you’re going to spend 4-6 years at a post-secondary institution (as well invest quite a bit of cash), why not take a weekend road trip first to see if it’s really a good fit for you!

Upgrading your business diploma to a Nipissing University degree

I’m a firm believer in post-secondary education. I have an obvious preference for Nipissing University, being a two-time graduate, but I support anyone who goes on to further their education. For a lot of students, this journey begins with college…but it doesn’t have to end there.

How NipissingU helped me to Love the Outdoors

For most of my life I have never understood people who loved the outdoors. Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory summed up my feelings when he said, “If outside is so good why have we spent thousands of years perfecting the inside”. I was also not alone, my siblings shared the same feelings and we collectively convinced ourselves that the nature lovers were somehow deceived and we had unmasked a great truth.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes or Going Back to School without Going “Back to School”

This is the first time in as long as I can remember that I haven’t gone “back to school” in September. I’ve been a student for a long time. For someone who wasn’t the most studious in my younger years I made the choice to attend school for a lot longer than I “had” to. After elementary and high school, I went on to university and college and then more university. I think my parents were scared I would be a student forever…literally.

So you’ve decided to come to Nipissing

Yes, going away to university for the first time is scary. You are not alone. It will be okay, I promise. I remember being really scared to leave home for the first time. I was nervous about all the unknowns that lie ahead. But what you need to know is that those fears dissipate within about two weeks. Once you are settled in to residence, you’ve met your roommates, gone to your first week of classes, and met your professors, you’ll come to realize that you can handle it and that everything is going to be alright.

The Application and Holiday Season is Here!

Now that December is upon us, and with no snow on the ground (as of writing this blog), I am happy to say that I am starting to welcome the cheery holiday spirit! Recruiters from across the province have likely stopped travelling and are slowly unwinding the season, which means that many students in Ontario are finalizing their OUAC Applications. This is such an exhilarating time that it’s hard to contain my shared excitement!

Here’s to Another Year on the Road

Alas, another year of travelling is upon us! This is the best part of year, because we are now meeting a whole bunch of new students. They are looking for and will certainly find their way in the next six months. There are many questions (SO very many questions) and concerns from students at these visits but I am excited for all of them. Representing an institution like Nipissing that has so much to offer them makes answering the “tough questions” a real breeze.

Once a Laker, Always a Laker.

Hello everyone! My name is Samantha Fraser and I am a new member of the Student Recruitment Team here at Nipissing! I’d like to take a minute to introduce myself! I was born and raised in South Porcupine, Ontario, which is about four and a half hours north of North Bay, and eight hours north of Toronto. Growing up I was always a northern girl at heart, and so when it came time to choose a university, I knew that Nipissing was right where I belonged.

Get out there!

I am a firm believer that a positive or negative University experience is all about what you make of it. By taking advantage and becoming involved in all facets of your university life you will have a great time. Grab that bull by the horns and see where it takes you. If it takes you for a ride far from campus, you may have to walk back but it’s a story and it’s an experience you can reflect on. It’s this outlook that has allowed me to become involved in a ton of different things throughout my Nipissing University life. Reflecting on these experiences has allowed me as a Student Recruitment Officer to connect with prospective students on a different level.

It’s More Than Basketball

This past weekend, our school had our first-ever varsity basketball games. Both the men’s and women’s teams had their home openers against Carleton University. Beautiful British Columbia

I have an amazing job. Not only do I get to talk to students every day about how exciting it is to consider the university experience and how Nipissing may be just where they belong, I get to travel to do so. I have spent the last two weeks with 45 other Canadian Universities in Victoria, North Saanich, Shawnigan Lake, Nanaimo, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, Port Moody, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, West Vancouver and Vancouver, BC with the Canadian Universities Event (C.U.E.). Becoming a Southern/Northern Girl

I grew up in a small town in Southwestern Ontario, called Newbury. It has 440 people, and our main attraction is a Home Hardware, a beautiful Home Hardware, but still a Home Hardware. I grew up with cornfields, 40 degree weather with the humidex, and tobogganed down a ditch because that was our biggest hill in the winter.

Coming Back Home

Three weeks ago, I started working for Nipissing University as a recruitment officer. After finishing my undergrad in 2010 and leaving the North Bay area for Southern Ontario, I realized that I missed the camaraderie and the friendliness of this institution. I missed the natural beauty and the great people in North Bay. I remember my alma mater with a smile and I am excited that I get to convince students that this is where they belong.
