Balancing the Student Life

We are at a weird time of our lives – a time where we are expected to work, do school, volunteer, work out, sleep 8 hours a night, not miss a reading, have assignments completed well before they are due, and still have time for self care and friends. I am not a math major but I can guarantee that there are not enough hours in the day for that to happen. But somehow we are able to balance jobs, self care, extra curricular activities and to “do it all”.  I am not an expert on this and trust me, my to do lists are always long and I am always behind on sleep, but a few tips that have helped me are:

  • Use a planner/ stay organized: write down your commitments, schedule time for yourself, time for assignments and break down when you will compete items – when you start to break down tasks in small parts they are not so overwhelming (and there is no better feeling then crossing something off your to-do list)
  • Do things you are passionate about: I know it’s sometimes easier said than done, but finding a job you love or people you enjoy working with will make your job be a break from homework – I am so lucky to have found an on-campus job that I love, people who support me at my job, and students that I love to work with
  • It is okay to say no: the feeling of saying no or not being able to “do it all” is sometimes daunting, but saying no to an activity or event is okay! At the end of the day it will be more rewarding if you are happy, healthy and passionate about what you do – it’s easy to get caught up in today’s expectations of what we are supposed to do and who we are supposed to be, but putting yourself first is also important too!
