It’s that time of year again. The temperature has dropped below zero, the sun is up for less than ten hours a day, and many of us are looking for someone special to spend some quality time with during these drab winter days. Whether you’ve only just met or you’ve been together for a while, North Bay has plenty of options to suit your dating needs. Here are ten fun date ideas for you this winter:
1. White Water Gallery
If you enjoy art, the White Water Gallery is the perfect date spot for you. With weekly events, urban art demonstrations, frequently changing exhibitions, and a monthly poetry slam, you’re bound to discover something that peaks your interest.
2. Partners Billiards and Bowling
Sometimes first dates can be awkward, so why not make it a group event! Head over to Partners Billiards and Bowling, grab some really attractive bowling shoes, and get ready to embrace your competitive side. They have specials every day of the week, such as Bowl Your Arm Off and Rock N’ Glow Bowling. If bowling isn’t your thing, you can head downstairs for some rounds of pool.
3. Farmer’s Market
During the summer, the North Bay Farmer’s Market is the perfect place to pick up fresh produce, homemade goods, and gifts. However, the cold weather doesn’t stop local sellers. The Farmer’s Market continues during the winter at the North Bay Mall every Saturday morning. Take a walk around and visit over thirty vendors with products ranging from crafts, decor, clothing, food, and, best of all, delicious sweets!
4. Campus Trails
If you’re in need of some fresh air, the campus trails are just as beautiful during the winter as they are the rest of the year. Head over to the athletic office at the shared gym to borrow some snowshoes and make sure you wear layers. This is the perfect date option if you’re looking to get some physical activity, reconnect with nature, and maybe even show off your tree knowledge (if you’re like me). Spontaneous snowball fights are always an option.
5. Capital Centre
If you’d prefer to stay inside where it’s warm (I don’t blame you), then check out the events happening at the Capitol Centre. From live music, comedy, performing arts, and cheap movie screenings, every week brings something new. Inquire about student deals at the box office!
6. Trivia Night
What’s more attractive than intelligence? Show off your smarts, or laugh at your lack thereof, at the Raven and Republic’s Trivia Night, hosted every Monday and Tuesday night starting at 7:30. Admission is free and you have the chance to win Steam Whistle prizes and Raven and Republic gift cards!
7. Paint Night
You don’t have to be artistic to create a lovely painting at one of Marianne Vander Dussen’s art classes. Paint nights are a great way to express your creativity and create an art piece of your very own! Classes range in difficulty from easy to more challenging and the picture changes each week.
8. Varsity Games
If sports are your thing, include a Lakers varsity game in your date night! Basketball and volleyball games are held at the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletic Centre and are free to attend for Nipissing University students. Head over to Memorial Gardens for some Lakers men’s and women’s hockey. Tickets are only five dollars!
9. Live Music at Cecil’s
Check out Cecil’s Brewhouse and Kitchen if you’re looking for some great food and entertainment. They host open mic nights on Wednesdays and more live entertainment on the weekend. Visit their events section for more information on their daily specials.
10. Board Games at Twiggs
Twiggs Coffee Roasters is a popular date destination for students due to its proximity to campus, warm atmosphere, and tasty treats. Their hot drink menu is just what you need on a cold winter day. While you’re there, grab one of the board games on the back counter and challenge your date to some friendly competition.
